IEEE in 2050 and Beyond: What Society/Council Volunteers Need to Know
As volunteer leaders of IEEE’s Societies and Councils (S/C), you can play an important role in shaping the future of IEEE.
The IEEE in 2050 and Beyond white paper, published in December 2022, shares macro-level trends and drivers of change that are likely to have a significant impact on IEEE in the future. The white paper reports on the research of the 2022 IEEE Ad Hoc Committee on IEEE in 2050, appointed by 2023 IEEE Past President K. J. Ray Liu, and chaired by Roger Fujii, a past IEEE VP-Technical Activities and past President of the IEEE Computer Society.
Implications for Societies/Councils
According to Fujii, “The white paper identifies potential world scenarios for the future that are radically different than IEEE’s current business environment.
“To prepare for this new and uncertain future,” he continues, "Societies/Councils across IEEE need to consider new products and services focusing on the key themes identified in the paper, especially those related to growth in the importance of cross disciplinary technologies and skills, and addressing IEEE mission-based societal issues such as climate change, ubiquitous energy, reliable food sources, and accessible healthcare.”
Broad in scope, the white paper considers risks and opportunities for IEEE and its Organizational Units (OUs). Among the observations specific to S/C’s are:
- New IEEE Societies and Councils are likely to develop in response to the emergence of interdisciplinary communities.
- The membership demographics of these groups, how, when, and where they convene, as well as how community is defined will likely depend on which worldview(s) persist in the future.
- People will likely organize around synergistic topics of interest, which may actively include broad topics like social or environmental issues, in addition to purely technological topics.
- Groups will likely be broad in composition including those who align on technical interest, those from governments and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), educational institutions, corporate researchers, students, and other related audiences such as user communities and tech-curious communities.
- In all scenarios the committee explored, gatherings of special interest groups will likely form and dissolve quickly to address broader needs, reducing the need for extensive governance models.
Suggested Actions for S/C Volunteers
The ad hoc committee has transitioned to a subcommittee of the IEEE Strategy and Alignment Committee. The IEEE in 2050 and Beyond Subcommittee, chaired by Fujii, welcomes input and feedback from volunteer leaders to help inform the next phase of the committee’s work.
Suggested actions for S/C Volunteers include:
-
Become familiar with trends and drivers of change that can impact the future of your S/C and IEEE by reading the IEEE in 2050 and Beyond white paper.
- S/C Presidents may want to consider sharing the white paper with their Administrative Committee /Board of Governors (AdCom/BOG) groups, and incorporating time in their meetings to discuss the report, particularly as it relates to strategic planning.
-
Volunteers should consider providing feedback following discussions (and send any related questions) to the email alias: ieeein2050andbeyond@ieee.org.
Fujii concludes, “I am confident that the volunteer leadership within IEEE Technical Activities have the knowledge, skills, and leadership potential to prepare IEEE for 2050 and beyond.”

Society/Council Roster Updates
Now is the time to help your fellow volunteers by providing up-to-date contact information for your Societies/Councils.
The IEEE Organization Roster provides a quick and easy way to access names, positions and contact information and facilitates communication with current officers. The roster contains contact information based on the primary address selected in your IEEE Account. If you prefer a different address to appear on the roster, you have the ability to select a ‘Directory’ address in your IEEE Account.
Access to the roster is available to the volunteers that appear in the roster; access is not available to all IEEE members. The roster is password protected and is accessible via your IEEE Account.
The roster contains current members of the IEEE Board of Directors, major boards, society, council, and region/geographic officers. More information is available on the site.
Please check the roster information displayed for your Society/Council at http://www.ieee.org/rosters and send any changes (including changes to officers and committee chairs (names and positions for 2023) to Mary Curtis, IEEE Staff.
Future updates can be provided as appointments are made.
