Re: [802SEC] +++ 10-day EC Email Ballot +++ IEEE P802.3ba 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s Ethernet approval press release

All,

In respect to the IEEE P802.3ba press release 10 day EC ballot, sufficient
responses have been received to decide the matter per the early close
provision. I did received a few comments, these comments and my responses
are listed below. Based on this please find an updated version of the
release attached [IEEE_802-3ba_PR_v12p2.pdf]. For your reference I have
also attached a compare between the previous draft and this one
[IEEE_802-3ba_PR_v12p2Diff.pdf].

Best regards,
  David

One editorial: In one place, where it says "IEEE P802.3 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s
Ethernet Task Force", the "P802.3" should be "P802.3ba".

Response: ACCEPT

One suggestion: I think that "IEEE P802.3ba 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s Ethernet
Task Force" is pretty hard to parse in the middle of a sentence. I would
suggest something like:

-IEEE P802.3ba Task Force
-IEEE P802.3ba Task Force on 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s Ethernet

Response: ACCEPT in PRINCIPLE.
The text will be replaced with the first suggestion 'IEEE P802.3ba Task
Force'.

Geoff Thompson
==============

The following text from the P802.3ba press release is not strictly true in
a number of ways: "the first standard ever to simultaneously specify two
Ethernet speeds"

The full 802.3 standard simultaneously specified two Ethernet speeds ever
since the approval of 1BASE5 added 1 Mb/s into the 10 Mb/s of the full
standard. That amendment was approved on 12/28/87. Just exactly when
the next revision took place after that is not easy to determine, but it
was certainly a long time ago. Terminology between "revision" and
"edition" was not as carefully managed in those days.

Further, there have been at least two projects which arguably added two
speeds (i.e. two or more) of PHY to the standard at the same time. Those
would be:
  - 802.3ah EFM
  - 802.3av 10G EPON (different speeds in different directions

Therefore, I feel that the text should be removed or modified to more
accurately reflect the true situation.

Response: ACCEPT in PRINCIPLE.
[1] The text 'First-ever dual-speed Ethernet standard addresses explosive
..' will be changed to read 'First-ever Ethernet standard to specify two
new speeds addresses explosive ..'. [2] The text '.. simultaneously
specify two Ethernet speeds ..' to read '.. simultaneously specify two new
Ethernet speeds ..'.

===========================================================

The 10G-EPON standard was the first ever dual rate 802.3 standard ...
might consider some different wording here.
Response: ACCEPT in PRINCIPLE.
See response to Geoff Thompson comment above.

How do you enable 10GE deployments through 40GE and 100GE deployments?
Response: ACCEPT in PRINCIPLE.
The text '.. driving new development efforts, as well as enabling 10 Gb/s
Ethernet network deployments.' will be change to read '.. driving new
development efforts, as well as
providing new aggregation speeds that will enable 10 Gb/s Ethernet network
deployments.'.

=========================================================

The release should include reference to the Data Centre applications of
40Gb/s and 100Gb/s Ethernet. Please change '.. more powerful server
architectures, network providers ..' to read '.. more powerful server
architectures, data centers, network providers ..'. Please also change '..
high-performance computing, data centers, telecommunications carriers ..'
to read '.. high-performance computing, data centers, telecommunications
carriers ..'.
Response: ACCEPT
