Re: [802SEC] January 2008 Pacific Rim Interim-response needed
Bob,
I am opposed to IEEE 802 hosting this interim or pretty much any other
interim. I think the first time IEEE 802 hosted an interim, it was in
Vancouver where it was done because we hadn't met our room night quota
at the plenary. Hosting the interim was done because it got us off the
hook for an extra charge - I think that was okay but it shouldn't have
been a precedent for doing other hosted interims.
I don't think a hosted non-North American interim makes us look any more
international. Our working groups have been able to do plenty of non-NA
meetings without IEEE 802 hosting. Last year IEEE 802.1 met in both
China and England. Next year, both 802.1 and 802.3 are scheduled to meet
in Switzerland. This is fairly typical of our other Working Groups.
An IEEE 802 hosted interim just takes planning time and attention that
could be spent on arranging a non-NA plenary. If London is any measure,
it will also impact our ability to fund a non-NA plenary. We are already
scheduled out on plenaries through 2008, but now is the time to be
working on a non-NA venue for a 2009 plenary - not an interim.
I also agree with John Barr's comments about Pacific rim locations.
Locations such as China, Japan or Korea would put us closer to most of
our Pacific rim attendees. Additionally, meeting in Australia after
London sends the message that we are quite willing to host outside NA as
long as the local language is English and the culture is Western.
Except perhaps for a situation similar to the reason for the Vancouver
interim, I expect I will vote against any new IEEE 802 hosted interims.
Regards,
Pat

EC Colleagues
Given that we did not have an opportunity to complete the discussion at
Friday's meeting, I need you to get back to me (no later than close of
business Nov 28) with answers to the following two questions. If I do
not hear from you, I will assume the answer is no. You can assume that
Pacific Rim locations will be at least as expensive as London in terms
of registration fees if not more so. Room rates should be substantially
less and more on a par with US locations. Every effort will be made to
keep costs down.
1. Would you bring your WG to an interim in Sydney in Jan 2008?
2. If you answer to the first question is no, would a location
elsewhere in the Pacific Rim change your answer?
Based on the number of yes responses to the first question, I will see
if it possible to put together a workable session with the interested
groups for review.
