Buzz,
If that is true, then our service
provider needs to learn a bit more about wireless. The Cisco APs are
among the "hottest" (highest transmit power) APs available. This is not
compatible with a high density environment. In a high density
environment, the need is for APs to be closer together and operating at lower
power, to increase the overall capacity of the entire WLAN. If the
transmit power is high and the APs are placed close together, the APs wind up
interfering with each other and reducing the overall capacity of the
WLAN. The more APs you put into the WLAN, the lower the capacity gained
by each AP.

Bob, The Cisco
AIR-AP1231G-A-K9 is the only unit our service provider, IDEAL Technology,
would recommend for our type of high density configurations.
Thanx, Buzz

Disapprove.
There is no need to purchase this equipment at this price. There are
plenty of other solutions that are better and cost less (my own company's, for
example). Cisco's equipment, even at the "discounted" $700 is absolutely
the most expensive and lowest performance that you can
buy.

Subject: [802SEC] +++EC Email Ballot+++
Allocation of Funds for the Acquisition of Wireless Access Points for Plenary
Meeting Network Support
Dear EC
Members,
This is a 10 day email ballot to make a determination on the
below motion to allocate additional funds for equipment purchase.
The ballot
opens 8PM EDT 5May 2004 and closes 8PM EDT 15May
2004.
Regards,

Motion:
Whereas the 802 EC had approved $7,500 for acquisition of 44 Wireless
Access Points (WAPs) at the closing EC meeting in Orlando; and
Whereas
Cisco Systems has now generously agreed to provide 24 of those WAPs to IEEE
802 for a substantially discounted net value of $3500; and
Whereas
that leaves us with the need to acquire 20 additional WAPs on the retail
market at an estimated $700 each (total = $14K); and
Whereas we
therefore need to allocate an additional $10K to complete the acquisition of
the needed equipment in time for our Portland plenary session;
Therefore be it resolved that: the IEEE 802 Executive Committee
approves expenditure of up to an additional $10K for Acquisition of Wireless
Access Points for Plenary Meeting Network Support (total of $17,500 for the 44
WAPs).
