There is the feeling among many that active participation in ballots (i.e., reading and providing actionable comments) from a wide variety of technical individuals is an important part of the standards development process. However, it appears that the active participation we get in ballots is only a small fraction of the potential pool of participants who would be able to provide quality comments and proposed solutions (which includes ones for which the group might disagree). I am forming an ad-hoc to brainstorm ideas with which we might encourage broader participation in our balloting process. An example of a proposals is: - Request that individuals read and focus on specific section (and can read more), ensuring that each section has multiple requested reviewers. I hope that we come up with a variety of ideas as it is likely that one "solution" won't fit all (they rarely do). Please respond to me if you would like to join this ad-hoc or if you have any ideas. You don't need to attend any meeting to suggest an idea or complain about an idea we develop. We are a volunteer organization, so these methods should focus on encouragement and not rely on enforcement. James Gilb ---------- This email is sent from the 802 Executive Committee email reflector.
