Dear Paul,
Thanks for the invitation to take part in an IEEE 802 town hall event. I’m very favorably impressed with the thoughtfulness of the planning. In particular, I’m very positive about the proposed format, especially the distribution of questions in advance which is very fair and which I think has the ability to put the candidates at ease; the structure of the timing of questions; and the selection of the moderator. But I think it is too late to conduct this event.
In addition to everyone being tired of too many Zoom or equivalent meetings, the timing is inappropriate in that the event would be between traditional 802 meetings, and during the time when most US people are on vacation, thereby tilting the attendance unfairly geographically. In addition, the timing is not in conformance with the requirement in ec-21-0156-00-00EC mandating a minimum of four weeks’ notice to the relevant email reflector. It is also not in conformance with the 60-day notice requirement of the IEEE Board of Director’s 2021 IEEE Annual Election Guidelines, even though the full 60-day requirement has become controversial.
In addition, but more personally, I would have wished that your proposal had come earlier in the election cycle. I think now it is too late to juggle in a week or two the needed preparation time; existing commitments to work, both on company tasks and for other standards projects; planned summer vacations; and a whole bunch of final campaign actions that have been in the works for quite a while.
It would have been fun. I suggest that IEEE 802 plan to organize a town hall event next year in a February or March time frame, giving lots of notice and allowing for feedback from the candidates as to their thoughts to make for a mutually supportive and comfortable event. Also, I plan to offer my support to the IEEE Elections Oversight Committee to draft revisions to the current election rules to make it easier to facilitate both live and virtual town halls with interested OUs.
Regards,
Mark
