Hi Adrian,

   From a historic point of view, we were called 802 SEC, 802 LMSC, 802 EC, and some other variants.

The Reflector stds-802-sec@listserv.ieee.org shows that SEC was used prior to EC.

Over the time we have revised the rules, the names have changed.

Sometimes the name changed back and forth in the same revision cycle.

So while we do have it clearly noted as Pat points out, that citation has had a history of changing over time.

That it's in the rules doesn't make it right.     Executive committee is the term used by other sponsors when a
subset of the sponsor is involved.   In our case,  executive committee should mean the officers of the sponsor.

It's no big deal - I just wondered if there was a historic reason.

LMSC stands for LAN/MAN Standards Committee. If we called ourselves Sponsor Committee and the acronym SC was used, it would be ambiguous whether it stood for Sponsor Committee or Executive Committee.  There are no occurrences of "Sponsor Committee" in  the LMSC P&P and the LMSC OM. The baseline sponsor P&P doesn't have the term Sponsor Committee either. It does mention Executive Committees as one of the types of administrative subgroups a sponsor might have.

The implication of that name is that the EC is an executive subset of the Sponsor Committee.  However,  the EC
comprises all the members of the LAN/MAN Sponsor Committee,   so its separate identification is nugatory.
