Dear EC members, As Jon requested please find attached an updated draft of the IEEE 802.3 1 Twisted Pair 100 Mbit/s Ethernet Study Group press release based on the
comments I’ve received so far which are attached below – I’ve provided both a diff and a clean version. I hope to open the email ballot in a couple of days but would be happy to receive further comments before then. Best regards, David ----- Comment 1 ----- Commenter: Pat Thaler Comment: In Thomas's quote, " The new study group will help develop another single twisted pair technology standard" A study group doesn't develop a standard (even though in this case we hope it goes as far as allowed in choosing the path).
Perhaps, "The new study group expects to lay the groundwork for another single twisted pair technology standard" Or "provide the basis to initiate work on another" Response: Accept. ----- Comment 2 ----- Commenter: Geoff Thompson Comment: I see a need for one change. Specifically, the following text is incorrect: ============================================== "...today announced the formation of the IEEE 802.3 Single Twisted Pair 100 Mb/s Ethernet Study Group to explore the market opportunities and needs for multiple Ethernet
speeds in automotive networking." ============================================== The above statement exceeds the scope of the Study Group that is, it is the scope of the group to explore [blah, blah] for exactly one additional speed and a specific speed
at that. Therefore, I believe that the text should read: ============================================== "...today announced the formation of the IEEE 802.3 Single Twisted Pair 100 Mb/s Ethernet Study Group to explore the market opportunities and needs for a 100 Mb/s speed
for Ethernet in automotive networking." ============================================== Also, I believe that the new group would have every right to move forward were the existing 1000BASE-T1 group somehow fail or get delayed. Thus, it is not "multiple" speed
in that the project's existence depends in any way on there being another speed around for automotive networking. (Yes, this is splitting hairs, no, I do not expect this to happen.) Response: Accept. ----- Comment 3 ----- Commenter: Marek Hajduczenia
Comment: I have a concern about the statement "to ensure that high-priority traffic is delivered predictably and with low-jitter", which implies that we cannot do that in today's
Ethernet systems. In fact, I believe this to be a generally incorrect statement since (for example) EPON systems available today allow for classification and prioritization of traffic, where (high priority) premium content is delivered even when the links
are congestion. From that perspective, IET provides improvement to already existing mechanisms, but not a ground breaking mechanism to do so.
I would suggest the following revision to the last sentence in the second para to read: "Additionally, the IEEE P802.3br™ Interspersing Express Traffic Task Force is working
to develop a draft standard providing improved hardware-level support for IEEE 802.1™ Audio/Video Bridging and Time Sensitive Networks, which provide predictable, low-jitter delivery of high-priority traffic even over congested links." Response: Accept. Furthermore, I would suggest that this text be given its own paragraph and not be glued to paragraph focused on automotive applications. Right now it is pushed in the middle
of text on cars and sticks out of the context. Response: Accept. ----- Comment 4 ----- Commenter: John D’Ambrosia Comment: I agree with Geoff on this point, and try as I may, trying to expand this in this paragraph is very challenging.
Other thoughts include – Additional Change #1 Additionally, the IEEE P802.3br™ Interspersing Express Traffic Task Force Response: Accept. Additional Change #2 Many users, premium and volume vehicle manufactures, and their suppliers, desire
Response: Accept in principle. See response to comment 5 below. ----- Comment 5 ----- Commenter: Geoff Thompson Comment: My own preference would be to keep this press release focussed on 100 Mb/s, thus I would rather not even have the text encompassed by John's change
#1 As for change #2, how about something like: Many vehicle manufactures, and their suppliers, desire IEEE 802.3 standards-based interoperable solutions in order
to enable and extend a multi-vendor supplied eco-system for the automotive industry. While an increasing number of automotive sub-systems will require a 1 Gb/s Ethernet connection, the stringent economic constraints of the volume vehicle environment only
allow the use of a 100 Mb/s Ethernet connection in many of the applications. A reduced data rate will allow for less expensive ECUs, and more economical twisted pair wiring. As a result, automotive vendors are looking for an IEEE standardized, interoperable
solution at 100 Mb/s. Response: Accept. ----- Comment 6 ----- Commenter: Pat Thaler Comment: I approve, but some of the text should be amended. In addition to what Geoff pointed out, Thomas's quote includes, " The new study group will help develop another single twisted pair technology standard" A study group isn't chartered to develop a standard.
Perhaps, "The new study group expects to lay the groundwork for another single twisted pair technology standard" Or "provide the basis to initiate work on another" Response: Accept in principle. The text in the quote has been change to read: ‘The new study group expects to lay the groundwork for another single twisted pair technology standard’. From:

On Behalf Of Jon Rosdahl David, would you mind putting together a draft that includes the suggested changes so that we can see what you think it says now? I find myself agreeing with Jeff and Pat and John...but not sure how best to review the resulting text edits. On Thu, May 8, 2014 at 1:49 PM, Pat Thaler <pthaler@broadcom.com> wrote: Hi David,
