Luigi, I certainly agree with Geoff that this is a fundamentally BAD IDEA !!! I think switching to email address for UserID is also a big mistake since people switch email addresses all the time for various reasons and it’s the quickest way I can think of to lose contact with lots of our members. Members may change passwords frequently but very few would voluntarily choose to change their UserID. Those tend to stay very stable over time. If nothing else you should at least allow folks to login with either their UserID or their email address. Since we now require IEEE access for many critical IEEE-802 functions it is very important that we make it easy for them to do that. We will lose more memberships if we don’t. J

I strongly feel that it is a major mistake and great disservice to standards and standards volunteers to remove accounts just because they are inactive. A great deal of the value of past records of IEEE standards activity is to provide unequivocal records of prior art being before the public. Such information is quite valuable during patent litigation against claims that certain patents are being de-facto infringed because a particular product implements a standard.
This sometimes shows up in very strange ways. In a recent instance, a patent nominally associated with implementations of 802.9 (a long dead standard) was claimed by the NPE owner as being essential in implementations of USB.
The cost of keeping archival material on-line is minimal and is a great service to those corporations that implement standards.
In my particular case, my name is on the accounts associated with the 802.23 Working Group. That group and the efforts leading to it cover the period of time from July 2009 to July 2011. The PAR was withdrawn in the summer of 2011.
