Re: [802SEC] +++ 10-day EC Email Ballot +++ IEEE P802.3bj Ethernet operations over backplanes and copper cable assemblies PAR approval press release

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for your comments - while I'm looking at your comments after the SASB agenda has been approved - the motion is to issue this release is contingent both on the SASB approval and confirmation of John D'Ambrosia as IEEE P802.3bj Task Force chair - so there is still some time.

In respect to the capitalization of job titles the following is the information I received from the IEEE in respect to this:

-----

IEEE uses AP Style, which is a particular style of copywriting that adheres to standards set forth by the Associated Press. I'd say that 90% of print and online outlets adhere to AP Style or some pretty close variant thereof. While it looks a bit strange, we do follow their guidelines which call for professional titles to be uncapped. Since most outlets today follow AP Style, deviating from it means added work for editors and journalists, who will have to change the copy back so that it falls in line with what the Style calls for - definitely not something we want to do.

----

In respect to boilerplate comment, I will pass your comment on to Karen McCabe shortly.

Best regards,
  David

David-
As of the minute I write this, I still have a vote.
I hope you read this and record my vote before the SASB agenda gets approved.
I vote APPROVE

I suggest the following editorial changes.
Item #1
This version changed the capitalization of Johns job. (i.e. from "Chief Ethernet Evangelist" to "chief Ethernet evangelist").  That is effectively changing it from his job title to a generic job description.  Since (I believe) "Chief Ethernet Evangelist" is what it says on John's business card, this would be an incorrect change.

(Checking the web for grammar rules supports my thesis, you should feel free to do the same or check all of the usage examples at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title )

Item #2
In the boilerplate "About IEEE"
It says:
"IEEE is the trusted voice on a wide variety of areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics."
The scope of IEEE work in communications far transcends "telecommunications".  In standards, the IEEE has major competitors in that space in TIA and ITU-T.  My point is that it would be far more accurate to just say "communications" instead of "telecommunications".  That would certainly include telecommunications but also reflect the far wider work that the IEEE does in the communications space (e.g. deep space telemetry, local area networks) than just telecommunications.

Best regards,
    Geoff

Dear EC members,

The IEEE-SA has prepared a press release in anticipation of the approval of IEEE P802.3bj Ethernet operations over backplanes and copper cable assemblies PAR at the IEEE-SA Standards Board meeting on Saturday 10th September. I have attached the latest draft as well as a diff to the version I circulated about a week ago.

In addition, John D'Ambrosia is quoted as the Task Force Chair however he can't be confirmed as the chair until the PAR is approved and the Task Force meets for the first time on Tuesday 13th September. Based on this the release will be issued contingent on the both the PAR being approved and John being confirmed as chair.

Paul has delegated the conduct of the EC electronic ballot on the following motion to me.

---

The EC supports the IEEE P802.3bj Ethernet operations over backplanes and copper cable assemblies PAR press release, to be released contingent upon the IEEE-SA Standards Board voting to approve the IEEE P802.3bj PAR and confirmation of John D'Ambrosia as IEEE P802.3bj Task Force chair, with editorial changes as deemed necessary.
