[802SEC] IEEE P802.3bf draft PAR and 5 Criteria - MAC service interface and management parameters to support time synchronization protocols
Dear EC members,
In support of subclause 11.2 of the LMSC Operations Manual (30 day rule)
please find below the required information in respect to IEEE P802.3bf MAC
service interface and management parameters to support time
synchronization protocols for consideration at the November 2009 plenary.
Best regards,
David

Draft 5C [

].
[2] Explanatory technical background material:
This project is to amend IEEE Std 802.3 to provide an accurate indication
of the transmission and reception initiation times of certain packets as
required to support IEEE P802.1AS Timing and Synchronization. Ethernet can
be applied in many new applications if a time synchronization capability
is added. Potential new applications include: Audio-Video bridging;
telecommunications; wireless backhaul; industrial control and SmartGrid.
For example Audio-Video bridging is targeted at mass market consumer
electronic products.
[3] Work plan for the development of managed object definitions:
The project will include a protocol independent specification of managed
objects with SNMP management capability to be provided in the future by an
amendment to the yet-to-be-approved IEEE P802.3.1 Ethernet MIBs.
[4] Status of the development of the PAR:
The PAR and 5C drafts are pending IEEE 802.3 Working Group approval at the
November Plenary. Since the submission deadline for the December NesCom
meeting (19th October) occurs prior to the date of the November IEEE 802
EC meeting, I will pre-submit this draft PAR to NesCom on the
understanding that:
[1] Any changes to the draft PAR text resulting from the Plenary will be
promptly communicated to the NesCom Administrator.
[2] Should the IEEE 802.3 Working Group not approve the submission, it
will be removed from the IEEE 802 Executive Committee and NesCom agenda.
[3] Should the IEEE 802 Executive Committee not approve the submission,
it will be removed from the NesCom agenda.
