Buzz I
want to restate the facts just to make sure I followed
you....
We had
a deal with CISCO to buy 44 units at $150 each. That would be a total cost
of of $6600. I assume we approved $7500 so we would have some
reserve.
Now
CISCO has said nope.... We will only sell you 24 at that price. The
current worst case street price for the units is $700, though you might do
better with some searching on the web.
The
new worst case total cost should then be 24*$150 + 20*700 = $17600.
(Includes Tax and shipping?)
So, I
will note that this worst case cost is slightly more than what your are asking
($17500). To be clean, I think you should ask approval for $18000.
That way you know you can cover the full cost.
Personally, I agree with Bob that $700 a pop seems a bit much for an
AP. I recognize this an Enterprise class device rather than a home device,
but can Tony provide some justification as to why CISCO is the only product we
will consider? There are other manufacturers that make Enterprise class
devices. It would be nice to have some data on the cost for maybe one or
two similar competitors, and an explanation from Tony as to why he has
selected this device. This is a relatively large outlay of funds, and some
rational on the cost / performance tradeoffs would be useful. At $150
a pop, I had no problem seeing that we were getting our money's worth.
$700 a pop is a tougher sell....

Buzz,
In
the original ballot, it said the discounted price was $350. I assume
that is what you mean hear rather than $150.

Matt,
Originally, we had
budgeted the price of all 44 at the Cisco discount price of $150 each.
Unfortunately they
could only provide 24 for us at that price, so we have to purchase the
remainder at the web price $700 (I actually now have a quote at $567 each
from LANcity).
The units are the
Cisco AIR-AP1231G-A-K9 units which are fully manageable and do
802.11a/b&g that IDEAL has recommended we purchase for our high density
configurations.
Thanx for your
support.
Thanx, Buzz Dr. Everett O.

I'm
not objecting, but just so I understand....
The
original cost was $7500, and the new cost is $17500. Are we saying
that we originally under estimated the cost of the
equipment?
Out of
curiosity, is there a specific type of AP we are buying at $700
each?

Ballot+++ Allocation of Funds for the Acquisition of Wireless Access
Points for Plenary Meeting Network Support
Dear EC
Members,
This is a 10 day email ballot to make a determination on
the below motion to allocate additional funds for equipment
purchase.
The ballot
opens 8PM EDT 5May 2004 and closes 8PM EDT 15May
2004.

Motion:
Whereas the 802 EC had approved $7,500 for acquisition of 44
Wireless Access Points (WAPs) at the closing EC meeting in Orlando; and
Whereas Cisco Systems has now generously agreed to provide 24 of
those WAPs to IEEE 802 for a substantially discounted net value of $3500;
and
Whereas that leaves us with the need to acquire 20 additional
WAPs on the retail market at an estimated $700 each (total = $14K); and
Whereas we therefore need to allocate an additional $10K to
complete the acquisition of the needed equipment in time for our Portland
plenary session;
Therefore be it resolved that: the IEEE 802
Executive Committee approves expenditure of up to an additional $10K for
Acquisition of Wireless Access Points for Plenary Meeting Network Support
(total of $17,500 for the 44 WAPs).
