RE: [802SEC] Transportation to/from SFO to the Hyatt

There is also a Budget pick-up and drop-off at the Hotel. I will be renting a car to drive one way from Sacramento to SF and then renting another car to drive the other way at the end of the meeting. I did this for the IETF meeting in San Francisco and the price of the rental each way was about the same as the cost of one day of parking at the hotel. The one downside is that the Budget office at the hotel closes fairly early at the hotel on Sunday (3PM I think) but one can also drop off ones bags at the hotel then drive over to another downtown Budget site and take a cab or walk back to the hotel. I believe Hertz also has downtown locations.

For most people, there is no point to having a car parked at the hotel. Traffic in SF can be terrible, there are lots of restraunts close by and public transit as Howard says if you want to go farther afield. If those choices don't suit, one can afford quite a few cab rides for the price of parking plus car rental.

I expect most of our attendees are well-traveled enough to realize that, but it might be good to add some of the info - especially the new BART station to the meeting info.

But, I agree with Buzz's general point. It wasn't wanderlust that kept 802 from meeting in the San Francisco Bay Area (the whole Bay Area and not just the City). It was the unavailability of meeting space on our price and terms until the high tech bubble burst (which I think has more to do with the current availability then the travel concerns after 9/11). And we did have interim meetings in the Bay Area. Rich mentioned a number of our fancier 802 locations, but we went plenty of less exciting places as well.

The great thing is that with the new BART station at
SFO, you don't need a rental car at all! If out of towners
aren't aware of this, perhaps we should tell them. There
is now a brand spanking new BART station at the San Francisco
International Airport where you can board a train that will
whisk you to the Embarcadero BART station in all of 30 minutes,
for a one-way fair of $4.70. You can't travel between these
two points cheaper or faster by any other means.

The Embarcadero BART station is about 2 blocks from the hotel.

For more info, see:

http://www.bart.gov/

Between BART, cable cars (the world's only municipal
roller coaster) and taxis, most people will have no
need for a rental car whatsoever, at least during the
week of the meeting.
