RE: Straw Poll for Millenium Medal
Pat, I know all too well how much work Geoff and Howard have put in on the 802.3 standards. I was in no way attempting to demean their very significant contributions. I'm just suggesting that it is personally distasteful to me to see the Exec Comm ONLY nominating members of the SEC, as though, you don't count if you're not a member of this secret club. I instead view the SEC as necessary(?) set of bureaucrats whose primary purpose is to provide some administrative assistance to the folks who really create these standards. I certainly cannot tolerate the thought that there is no other (non-SEC) person out there deserving of a Millennium Medal. I think we should be awarding at least 10 or 12 medals, and I would be very comfortable including Howard and Geoff in that group. We have any number of outstanding contributors that are NOT ON the SEC (eg. Tony, Mick, Howie J, etc, etc, etc). Can't we see our way to "Share the Wealth." I know we're wonderful, but I bet we'd get!

I can personally atest that Geoff and Howard did many hours of work well before they were Executive Committee members. They have made numerous technical contributions and wrote text for documents. Geoff was working hard on 802.3 when I started attending in 1985 and his involvement has been continuous all these years. In addition to 802.3 work he has been involved in building wiring standardization. That these people have become leaders does not mean that they haven't done real work (and they are still doing real work).
Don of course has participated mainly in a leadership role. Most of his career has been dedicated to leading standards work from IEEE 488 to IEEE 802.3 and IEEE 802. He also was instrumental in helping those standards be recognized as international and working with JTC-1 to get one document to stand as the IEEE and ISO/IEC standards for 802. It was all a great deal of work, a lot of travel and more than a little stress.
I am less aware of Jim's non-Exec years as he worked in 802.5. He has certainly been a conscientious chair of .5 and 802 and watched out for 802's needs in other forums.
I'm not sure where the number of 4 nominees came from. My impression is that it was self imposed. Perhaps we should allow for more. In any case, the cover letter does not indicate any limitation on who can make nominations. It is addressed to Working Group Chairs as well as to others so presumably at least Working Group chairs can make recommendations and perhaps anyone can.

Doesn't anyone else think that this seems just a BIT self-congratulatory ??? The SEC ONLY nominates SEC members !!! What about some of the folks who actually did some of the work ??? I, for one, am embarrassed at such a display of self-aggrandizement.

Millennium Medal IEEE-SA Criteria
Context: At the beginning of the third millennium give recognition to 3000 individuals for their professional achievements worthy of recognition for significant impact leading up to and including the new millennium. Millennium medals are to be awarded to those individuals for their outstanding contributions to the profession and to society in general. The medals are to be awarded by Societies, Sections, and major boards of which the IEEE-SA is one such entity. Each major board will recognize outstanding individuals based on outstanding contributions to that board and its major programs and activities. A recipient must be a member of the IEEE but does not have to be a member of the IEEE-SASB or the IEEE-SA BoG. We should identify and recognize individuals whose contributions helped to bring in and support the new millennium.
Two categories of nominees will be considered:
1) Nominees recognized for their development of standard(s) having a major impact on industry. This could be for a single standard or a family of standards.
2) Nominees recognized for their contributions to the development or establishment of management infrastructure having significant impact on industry now or in the next millennium. This could be for a new major infrastructure or for major improvements and evolution of an existing infrastructure.
The following information is required to evaluate nominees for a Millennium Medal:
1) Name of candidate. A group of individuals might also be considered.
2) Category for consideration (i.e., standards development or management infrastructure)
3) Identification of the standard or management infrastructure for which the individual should be recognized.
4) The role the individual played in generating the standard or infrastructure for which a medal is to be awarded. This should be a brief, clear, and succinct statement no longer than a single paragraph in length.
5) A brief statement identifying the nature of the impact expected to flow from the individual's efforts. This should be a clear and succinct statement no longer than a single paragraph in length.
